How Our Community Sparked a Movement for Queer Group Trips

queer group trip to Thailand

It all started with two queer girls in their mid-twenties backpacking across India. Like many LGBTQ+ travellers, we were excited to explore the world - but quickly found that backpacking culture was incredibly isolating for queer people.

We faced everything from awkward questions to outright homophobic comments. People often didn’t believe our relationship was real, or they’d ask wildly inappropriate things. It made us realise how hard it can be to travel authentically as queer people - especially when you’re just trying to enjoy the experience, not constantly explain your identity.

From Frustration to Community

That frustration inspired us to create the LGBTQ+ Backpackers Facebook group & destination WhatsApp chats - a space for queer travellers to connect and share their experiences. After a few of our videos went viral, the group quickly grew, with thousands of members joining in a matter of weeks. What we saw again and again was how many people said: “I’ve always wanted to travel, but I’ve been too nervous to go alone.” That’s when we knew something more was needed.

The Birth of Our Queer Group Trips

As more people asked if we would ever organise queer group trips, we started to explore the idea seriously. After many emails & calls later, we partnered with experienced travel operators who started putting together trips for us - they were such a success - the reviews says it all!

Why Queer Group Trips Matter

Backpacking culture is often built around a straight, heteronormative vibe - you've probably seen the TikToks of hostels that feel more like Love Island than a travel experience. For queer travellers, it can feel like we’re an afterthought - if we’re considered at all. That sense of invisibility can be isolating, even in spaces meant for adventure and connection.

Queer group trips change that. They give our community the chance to travel with like-minded people, to feel seen, safe, and celebrated. It's a space where you can show up fully as your authentic self - no explanations, no judgment, just good vibes and unforgettable memories with people who get it.

Join the Movement

Just like pride started as a protest, our community started as a response to homophobia on the road - but it’s grown into something so much bigger. Today, our queer group trips continue to grow, and our community is more vibrant than ever.

So if you’ve ever felt like travel wasn’t made for people like us - think again. This is your invitation to see the world, meet your people, and make memories that are truly yours.
